Tornado damage is from one of the most damaging storms in nature. They often strike without warning and cause devestation and loss of life indiscreminantly. Sometimes a tornado will touch down and cause total anhialation to one side of the street and leave the neighboring houses and businesses seemingly untouched. Other times, as in the case of the recent tornado which struck Joplin Missouri, entire swaths of residential areas and business parks lay in utter waste.
Whether your home or property has been directly hit by the force of a tornado or fortunate enough to not be totally obliterated it is a good idea to have your home or business inspected for damages that might not be apparent to the untrained eye.
Sometimes, as in the case of high wind damage, shingles can be blown up and down causing cracked shingles all over your roof. When the wind stops blowing the shingles settle down and from the ground it may appear that all is well. In fact, what you could have is a roof in serious need of repair. In addition, debris will often strike your roof at such high rates of speed that it can cause damage to your shingles and underlying structures. Again, this is often camaflauged to the untrained eye.
Having a qualified public adjuster inspect your home after a tornado is highly recommended. A public adjuster will identify problems that your insurance adjuster may have overlooked. Keep in mind that a public adjuster represents the insured, not the insurance company. Public Adjusters get paid a percentage of what they help you get on your insurance claims. What this means is that they have a vested interest in making sure that you know of every possible problem that a storm may have caused. Since they are not paid by the insurance companies, they will point out every occurance of storm damage they find.
